Could the GOP Please Get Its Head Out of The NRA's Ass?

There was a time, not so very long ago, when the random killing of 59 people and the injuring of more than 500 at a music festival would have shocked us. Now? Not so much. Oh sure, we still gasp at the latest headline and murmur about the human toll, the senseless violence, the frightening randomness of it. We try to understand the motives of someone who stockpiles hundreds of high-powered weapons and then turns them on innocent people. We listen to our politicians wring their hands and offer up yet another round of useless thoughts & prayers. We shake our heads sadly, and agree that it's a tragedy.

But then we move on. What else can we do? The bills still have to be paid, the kids still have to be fed, and life continues much as it has until the next person with a long gun snaps. We've gotten used to these things.

They're a part of everyday life now, because, FREEDOM! or something. The ever-rising death toll by guns in this country is a small price to pay for the right to mow down 60 people on any given day, amirite?

Wouldn't it be nice if there were some Congress-like governing body in this country that could enact sensible controls on gun ownership? Oh wait, there is.

Congress:
The Congress of the United States is the legislative, or lawmaking, branch of the federal government. It is a bicameral legislature, which means that it is made up of two chambers, or houses. They are the House of Representatives and the Senate. The U.S. Constitution gives the two houses similar powers.
Unfortunately, one entire wing of that fine edifice of governance is not much interested in saving lives. Here's Sen. Chuck Grassley back in February, for example, saying he's perfectly fine with putting more guns into the hands of the mentally ill, because FUCK YEAH! They are trying to make them quieter though, so there's that. After all, that loud noise is always so annoying when you're being shot.

You'd think this would have changed after Sandy Hook (oh wait, that never happened). Or Orlando, or Denver, or, or, or. You'd think so, but you'd be wrong. In fact, Republicans are still upping the ante on gun control after some lunatic came after one of their own. They are nothing if not consistent.

Look, I may be a librul snowflake, but I'm no gun-grabber. In fact, I just recently went to the local shooting range with my nephew, who's in law enforcement, and we squeezed off a few rounds. Whatever.

But do we really need to pull out the long guns at our peaceful protests? Do we really want guns on our college campuses? In our Bars? (Because what could go wrong)? For fucks sake, do we need guns in our churches now? Who Would Jesus Shoot?

All of which makes one wonder: How many have to die before the GOP gets it's head out of the NRA's ass and does something to enact sensible gun control?
